The Wailing Wall or the Western Wall is the only remaining architectural structure that is believed to be connected to the 2nd temple, initially rebuilt by Nehemiah and then beautified by Herod.

As the Jewish people are the only religious group with no central place of worship, the Western Wall has become the defacto holiest place in Judaism. Many religious Jews come to the wall during the Sabbath and religious feasts to pray and moan for the restoration of the Temple, rediscovery of the Ark and return of the Messiah.

No pictures can be taken of the Wailing Wall during the Sabbath. The picture on the left was taken during the Feast of Tabernacles. (Succoth)

Adjacent to the wall is a tunnel that runs about 400 metres along the whole Western Wall of the old city and beneath the present day Arab quarter of Jerusalem.
